In 1865, the New Zealand government moved amicably to Wellington, but it was Oakland that remained the most respectable metropolis in the Land of Long White Clouds. Hauraki Bay, on the shores of which is Oakland, in 2000 was declared a marine reserve. Around the city there are 53 volcanic hills; all of them are the results of explosions of molten magma, which happened here a long time ago. On the hills there are walkways and convenient picnic sites; and the locals and tourists with pleasure climb to the top to admire the opening views.
