Leaning across the table with his head awkwardly resting on the tommy-gun, Babchenko was fast asleep. Evidently, like Saburov, he hasn't been sleeping during the past few days. In thinking this, Saburov sudenly thought of himself and of all he has been going through during these four days and he was feeling all his bones aching with wearings. With gteat difficulty he pulled out his watch. It showed 9.15. It was exactly one hundred and three hours since he had jumped into this very room after he grenade he threw into it. Three hours after Saburov has gone to bed, he was aroused by the buzzing of the telephone. Babchenko, who didn't like his officers to sleep when he wasn't sleeping, has rung up and ordered the operator to wake Saburov. "You sleeping?" he inquired. "Yes." "All right, sleep then." Maslennikov, who was roused by the telephone and sat on the edge of the bed, guessed the nature of the conversation.
