The fight against the crisis in many countries is mainly focused on monetary changes (rate cuts, increased liquidity) and fiscal measures (refunds to households, help to businesses hit by the crisis through tax cuts, probably an increase in government spending). Unfortunately, these correct and timely recipes may not save the situation: both the demand and the supply of goods and services were under attack. Governments will either have to allow mass bankruptcies of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) or help them directly, which can be a politically non-obvious solution.
