Mary (M): Hello, Peter. How are you? We haven’t seen each other for a long time. How is life?
Peter (P): Hello, Mary. Life is wonderful. A couple of days ago I came home from the country of my dreams.
(M): The country of your dreams? Where is it?
(P): A long way from here. I’m talking about New Zealand.
(M): New Zealand? Wow! How was it? Tell me all about it.
(P): They sometimes call it ‘Kiwiland’ because of the kiwi birds and the kiwi fruit. It’s not a big country. It’s in the south-west Pacific, and it has two large islands: the North Island and the South Island.
(M): What’s it like then?
(P): It’s really beautiful. It’s got everything you can think of: rainforests, deserts, mountains, volcanoes, lakes, beaches… and the sea, of course.

(M): Did you see a coral reef?
(P): No. New Zealand doesn’t have a coral reef. But I saw lots of wild birds, like green kakapo parrots, which are heavier than other parrots, and kiwi birds. Did you know that kiwi birds can’t fly? I didn’t see any koalas though. There are also kauri trees - some kauri trees are 2,000 years old!
(M): That’s fascinating! What did you do there?

(P): We went sea kayaking. We also went on guided tours which are becoming more popular, and are not very expensive. But if you want to go alone there are visitor centres where you can get information.
(M): How about food? You probably ate seafood all the time.
(P): No, not all the time. I ate burgers and chips, too! The desserts are delicious: Hokey Pokey ice-cream and kiwi fruit were my favourite ones.
(M): It sounds wonderful. I’d love to go there!
