Out of luck
Tom (be) on his way to visit his parents. He (drive) for twenty minutes when his car (break down). He (get) out of the car and (try) to find out what the problem was. No luck! He (not know) much about cars. All he (know) was that his car (break down) in the middle of nowhere and that he (stand) in the rain, hoping that someone would help him. He (wait) for more than an hour when a lorry driver (offer) to drive him to his parents' house. They (get) there in twenty minutes. Tom (thank) the driver, got out of the car and (ring) his parents' doorbell. There (be) no answer. He rang again. No one (open) the door. He couldn't believe how unlucky he was! His parents (go) out and there he was again, standing in the rain, waiting for someone to drive him back home. This surprise visit wasn't such a good idea after all,' he thought to himself.
