The beginning of the history of England lies in the distant Middle Ages, and maybe even earlier - in those times when the Germanic tribes that surged from the continent captured the eastern coast of the British Isles. The Angles were attacked by the Vikings and Normans. But, unlike their British predecessors, having survived all subsequent invasions, they preserved their language and culture. Currently, England is, in fact, part of two associations - on the one hand, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on the other hand, the European Union - with different legislative bodies and different levels of sovereignty.
